Freeman Library Gives Clear Lake a Place to Create, Learn and Preserve

September’s Library Card Sign-up Month is a useful reminder of the tools on Diana Lane, from 3D printers and media converters to digital books and classes.

A box of family videotapes, an idea for a small invention and a reading list all have a potential starting point at Clear Lake’s Freeman Library. The branch at 16616 Diana Lane combines traditional borrowing with equipment for making objects and preserving older media. Its listed facilities also include study rooms, a computer lab and spaces for children and teens. Freeman Library’s official branch page

September is Library Card Sign-up Month, the American Library Association’s annual campaign to encourage people to use their libraries. In Clear Lake, it provides a timely reason to look beyond the shelves and understand how to get started with services already available in the neighborhood. ALA’s 2026 Library Card Sign-up Month

Start with the right library card

Harris County Public Library’s full-service Knowledge Card is free and can be obtained at a branch with an application and proof of address. It provides access to books and other physical collections, along with ebooks, audiobooks and online research and learning resources.

Harris County residents who want digital access can apply online for an iKnow card. People who already have a Knowledge Card do not need a separate iKnow card. The distinction matters when planning a visit: an online application for digital access is a different starting point from arranging to borrow physical materials. Plan a maker project before arriving

Freeman’s equipment inventory includes 3D printers, a laser cutter, a sewing machine, vinyl-cutting equipment and tools for electronics work. That creates opportunities to explore a design or learn a process before deciding whether to buy specialized equipment for home use. HCPL’s Freeman maker-equipment inventory

For 3D printing, HCPL requires a free orientation and a badge for the equipment a patron will use. After completing the process, users can reserve a machine through Maker Central. Patrons must be present to begin a print, and children younger than 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

HCPL’s detailed reservation instructions list finished prints at 10 cents per gram. Ask the branch to confirm the charge, project requirements and available appointments before committing to a design. HCPL’s 3D-printing instructions

Give family recordings a new format

The branch’s digital media lab lists equipment for VHS-to-DVD conversion, Super 8 film, Digital 8/Hi8 video and cassette-to-MP3 conversion, along with a photo scanner. For a household with recordings stored in several formats, that inventory offers a practical place to investigate a preservation project.

Start by identifying what you have. A cassette, a videotape and a reel of film require different equipment. Contact the branch with the format and approximate quantity, then ask about appointments, instruction and what storage media to bring. HCPL’s Freeman digital-media equipment list

Make the visit fit the task

Freeman also lists computer and technology classes, English-learning classes and citizenship classes. Check the branch’s event listings for dates, registration and any prerequisites; an equipment listing does not establish that a class or appointment is available that day.
